Breeding jewel cichlids?
I got two unsexed jewel cichlids and they are acting like they are going to breed. I have one big (about 7 inches) and one small one(about three inches)the guy from the store gave me the smaller one because he said when they have a deep red on their gills it meant that they were probably female.Would these be able to pair if they were male and female at this size,or does the female need to be bigger? also the big one is digging a pit in the gravel does this mean that they are going to breed soon? Please also send me anything else I need to know to breed them. I know this doesn’t have to do with much about this but I am going out of town for 5 days and a couple weeks and I can’t afford to get an automatic timer for my aquariums.Will the fish be ok without a light for 5 days?

They are definitely preparing to breed. He’s digging a hole for a place for her to lay her eggs. Size difference isn’t the biggest issue in the world, but I would recommend picking up another female so that he isn’t spending all of his time picking on her, therefore she won’t be getting overly stressed out and she will be more likely to spawn if there is another female present. Jewel cichlids breed very easily. The fact of not having a light on for 5 days will not affect anything. I recommend feeding them a large amount of food for the next week, then do a 25% water change and do not feed them that day. This will encourage them to breed. Good luck, and happy spawning.
